Surf icon George Gerlach passed away on January 20th. In 1962, he founded Surfers Supplies, one of the first surf shops in New Jersey. George was responsible for introducing many people to surfing and keeping them stoked with his love of the sport and his uncompromising enthusiasm. He was also a member of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame.
George was the very first person that I interviewed for my book, Surfing Jerseyland, and, man-o-man did he have some stories. We're going to miss him.
